In Nebraska, homeschooling is referred to as "exempt schooling" and is considered a form of non-approved and non-accredited private education.

Parents who wish to homeschool their children must file for exempt status under Rule 13 with the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE). This filing must be done by July 15th each year or by August 1st for those beginning homeschooling for the first time.

The exempt school program applies to children between the ages of 6 and 18. Exempt schools can also be outside the child’s home and have students from multiple families.
