When you are moving to a new city, you don’t want to stand out like a sore thumb. Here are some words or phrases you may hear around Omaha.
West O.
This is a reference to “West Omaha.” The exact dividing line between west Omaha and midtown is a great debate.
U.N.O.
It’s not pronounced like the card game. Each letter is pronounced. This is the most common way to refer to the University of Nebraska – Omaha.
Dodge, Maple, Pacific, Center
If a local gives you directions, they will likely reference one of these streets. And 9 out of 10 times, they won’t say “Maple Street” or “Pacific Street.” They will just say “Maple” or “Pacific.” So, if you hear one of these words, you’ll know what it means.
80, 680, 480
These are the major interstates in Omaha. If your lucky, someone may reference “I-80,” but often a local will tell you to take “480” and this can be confusing if you aren’t familiar with the interstate numbers.
Pop
According to PopVsSoda.com, 78% of locals refer to a carbonated, sugary beverage as “pop.” Almost 20% use the term “soda.”
If you ask for a “coke” anywhere in Omaha, you will get a Coca-Cola. They won’t ask you what type “coke” you want.
Temperature Tuesday
Temperature Tuesday is the most glorious time of year for Runza fans.
Every Tuesday in January and February, the 6am temperature at the coldest Runza location is the price you pay for an Original Runza Sandwich when you buy a medium fry & medium drink.
